This Week in Leichhardt

The OG has new owners

The Orange Grove Hotel, the corner pub on Balmain Rd that's poured beers since 1959, has changed hands. Bruce Hedditch, 80, is stepping back after four decades running the place, handing the keys to the McDowell family. Thanks Bruce for your service. It's always interesting seeing what happens to a place after changing hands, here's hoping for the best. Have a read here.

Leichhardt coffee is serious business

Last week we asked who pours the best coffee in the suburb, and 70 odd of you weighed in. The winner? None of the cafes we listed. The most popular answer was "somewhere else", with readers writing in their own favourites rather than settling on the shortlist, and a few names kept surfacing over and over... I've put the write-ins and cheerful protests is in Letters, below.). My personal fave in Wayne's Place ran a close second among the listed spots.

Rick's pantry is well stocked

There's a red timber cabinet on the corner of Renwick and Cary St that keep plenty in the neighbourhood fed. Rick's community pantry is loaded with free bread right now - sourdough, lebanese bread, scones, english muffins and crumpets - all there for the taking. The sign out front sums up the spirit nicely: take what you need, give what you canned. Good food saved from the bin, and great initiative for our suburb. (Source: Leichhardt Community Group)

The day we became Leichhardashians

A local christened residents of our suburb "Leichhardashians" this week on Facebook. It was too clever not to share. It arrived tucked inside a question - "what on earth is an Ooshie?" (which is a very Leichhardt way to make an entrance). The Hardt has no idea if the name will stick, but we're doing our bit right here to share. On that note: what do you call locals anyway? Leichhardtians was my understanding. Reply and let me know. (Source: Leichhardt Community Group)

Leichhardt local Peter Griffen, who runs the Glebe Art Show, wrote in about a soiree at his Emma St studio tomorrow night, raising money for the Royal Art Society. "We are all volunteers and not for profit," he wrote. "This is one way that we have come up with to keep the historic Royal on its feet." And on the studio itself: "We have a warehouse home and studio." Details are on the event post including how to RSVP

New floodlights going in at Lambert Park

Council is replacing the floodlights at Lambert Park, with works now under way at the round-ball heart of Little Italy. Mayor Darcy Byrne says the upgrade will make training and games safer for the thousands who play there each year, while cutting light spill onto the homes next door. It is part of a $4.8 million council program relighting five grounds across the inner west this year. (Source: Darcy Byrne FB Page)
