This Week in Leichhardt
Help settle the great Leichhardt coffee debate
Ask non-Leichhardt folk and they know our suburb is good for coffee, with a rich history of european espresso and a steady stream of cafes opening up. There's a queue out the door somewhere, a takeaway cup in half the hands on Norton St.
My pick is Wayne’s, but who do you reckon pours the best? Have your say below.
Who pours Leichhardt's best coffee?
A swim date is set for Callan Park
The Callan Park Tidal Baths now have an opening window: council says construction is underway, with the new harbour swimming spot due to open in summer 26/27. It has been about seven years in the planning, so a firm date is welcome news for anyone eyeing a dip close to home. A few locals have flagged the cost, but plenty more are counting down to the first swim. (Source: Leichhardt Community Group, Philippa Scott FB Page)
Tickets sold out (already) at the Oval
Turns out a lot of us wanted one last night on the hill. The free One Last Roar concert at the Oval, a send-off before the ground closes for its big redevelopment, has already handed out every ticket. Organisers say they're chasing more, and there's a waitlist open for anyone who missed the first round. Fitting, really, that the old ground fills up one more time before the works begin. A Book Week parade on Norton St
Berkelouw Books is throwing a kids' book parade to kick off Book Week, and the ask is a simple one - bring your little ones along dressed as their favourite book character to march. It's on next Saturday 22 August at 2pm, with a few freebies to give away and a colouring-in and activity table running all day. Here's hoping the shop fills up with wandering wild things and hungry caterpillars. (Source: Leichhardt Community Group)
Sydney Secondary wins two
Public Education Week gave a couple of Leichhardt names their moment. At the state awards a week and a bit ago, Mr Cauchie, who teaches at Sydney Secondary’s Leichhardt campus, was recognised for his work in the classroom. So was Kathryn, whose hours on the P&C keep so much quietly ticking along. Well done, the pair of you. (Source: Kobi Shetty FB Page)
This is democracy manifest
Council is throwing a few doors open for anyone who fancies a hand in how the area grows. One hundred randomly chosen locals spent the weekend at a forum on the Building Our Community plan, chewing over what our neighbourhoods need next. Alongside that, applications are open for the Local Democracy Groups, including a brand new one for the Greenway. Worth a look if you’ve got big ideas for Leichhardt.
