Leichhardt's Eighth Wonder of the World
Leichhardt Oval is about to close for a ~$47 million upgrade, and is coming back in a few years with a new grandstand and better facilities. So The Hardt reckoned it was worth pulling a few threads together before the gates close. After all, it's the ground that's hosted more first-grade footy than any other still standing, with crowds ten deep on the hill against the fence back in the great Balmain days. Paradise on Flood St
The Hardt's always glad to be reminded what's tucked away just off Norton St - a whole gallery of work, right here, worth the walk. Boomalli, the Aboriginal artists' co-op on Flood St, is opening "Paradise", a retrospective of work by the late James P. Simon, curated by Kyra Kum-Sing. It opens Wednesday 12 August from 6pm and runs through to early October, so there's plenty of time to wander in.
Readers cool on a Pioneer Park pizza oven
The idea of a shared wood-fired oven at Pioneer Park, floated by a reader a couple of weeks back, went to the vote. Of the readers who took part, the largest group didn't want rates spent on it, with the rest split between using one themselves and backing the idea but not the sharing. Safety around an open fire and who would maintain it came up more than once. Reader comments run in full in Letters, below.
New name proposed for Pioneer's rotunda
Council wants your view on renaming the rotunda at Pioneers Memorial Park in honour of former councillor Rochelle Porteous. There is a pop-up at the park tomorrow, Saturday 8 August, from 1.30 to 3pm, if you would rather say your piece in person. Otherwise the online form is open until 25 August. That old phone in the drawer
Most of us have one - a dead mobile or a charger tangled at the back of a drawer. The council's DV Safe Phone scheme turns it into something useful: drop it at the Leichhardt service centre, it gets professionally reset, and it goes to someone escaping domestic violence who needs a way to stay connected and safe. How to report a dumped hire bike
Share e-bikes left toppled on verges and footpaths have been wearing on locals, who say the things are heavy and awkward to shift, alarm and all. The state government has flagged a new statewide framework with set parking bays, zones for no entry and reduced speed as decided by councils, and fines of up to $55,000 for operators who leave fleets poorly parked. There's no local timeline yet. In the meantime, a resident who reported a bike through the Snap Send Solve app says Lime replied and arranged to collect it. (Source: We Love Haberfield FB Group)
