Editor's Note

Daylight savings starts this Sunday. We lose an hour of sleep but gain a public holiday on Monday and some sunlight in the eve. Rain is on the cards this w/e, but there are plenty of indoor events listed below, plus the Italian Film Festival and a couple of new restaurants to try. I also had a lovely letter from Lola this week reminding me just how good Leichhardt can be (read it at the very bottom of this email).

For those who've just joined: I live across the ditch in Annandale, but in a couple of weeks I'm handing over to Penny, a local of 30+ years, as editor. She lives on the NoMa side (Nth of Marion St) of Leichhardt and is more plugged in to what’s going-on.

This Week in Leichhardt

Bogong moths flutter into Leichhardt

The moths have landed, with reports of Leichhardt locals finding them around homes and gardens, on a clothesline and among native trees on Thornley St. For one local, it was her first Sydney sighting in years. These small visitors are migrating towards caves in the Australian Alps. They're endangered after a population collapse from 2018 to 2021, so let them rest rather than reaching for the spray. I have fond memories of them from the 2000 Olympics, at this time of year. Safe travels, little moths.

Improving Leichhardt's transport options

Council's housing plan from a few weeks back included a transport plan for Leichhardt. It's nothing groundbreaking, but includes bus priority on Marion and Norton streets, new bike lanes, and losing some street parking to make room for them. It's open for comment until 28 October.

Reader Miriam wrote in with a bigger point, saying one packed light rail stop isn't a transport hub, and getting home from Newtown by public transport was going to take her 50 minutes. It's got me wondering: you could fix one thing first about transport. Our businesses would surely would flourish with more connections.

Leichhardt police remember Constable Mia Lay

Following the recent passing of Constable Mia Lay in Redfern last Friday, Leichhardt Police Area Command paid tribute to her this past Tuesday. The command also marked National Police Remembrance Day by honouring all police officers who have lost their lives on duty. Our thoughts are with the Lay family. (Source: Leichhardt PAC FB Page)

Oval seats find new homes

A pretty cool gesture from Council last week: Wests Tigers members could take home seats from the Latchem Robinson Stand ahead of the redevelopment. Inner West Council posted a video of the day, calling it "a rare piece of history" for fans to own. Can't say these things were the comfiest places to be but would look good in the pool room. Lime bikes slashed in Callan Park

A post in the Facebook group reports that someone slashed the tyres on Lime bikes near the Callan Park skatepark. It's not clear who did it or why, though the post has reignited a familiar tension between riders who value the bikes and locals frustrated by them blocking footpaths, especially for people with disabilities or using prams. If a badly parked Lime bike is causing an obstruction, you can flag it through Snap Send Solve.

AI glasses banned

Smart glasses are part of a new wave of wearable technology, and Inner West Council is responding very early with a ban. No more AI smart glasses at council pools, change rooms, childcare centres or public toilets. Mayor Darcy Byrne announced last Wednesday that the council is banning the glasses and other wearable recording devices from its venues, over concerns they can film people without anyone realising. People who need the glasses as accessibility aids will be exempt. (Source: Darcy Byrne FB Page)

Letters to the Hardt

A reminder of Leichhardt’s luck

Hi there!

Big fan of this newsletter and the great community vibes you're fostering with it :) Just want to shoutout two great spots/activities in Leichhardt you may want to feature in the next edition - last week some friends and I tried Tashkent, the Uzbek/Uyghur restaurant in the Italian Forum.

It was excellent - the food, service, amazing comfortable loungey couches, and especially the tea! I hope more people go, I know there's not as much foot traffic down there so getting the word out could be a big help.

Also, the Italian film festival that's on at Palace Norton right now - I love that we always have a steady supply of interesting, international films accessible to us within walking distance. How lucky we are!

Thanks and keep up the good work!
