Leichhardt mentioned in the council housing plan
The council has this week put the second stage of its Our Fairer Future plan out for feedback. You can read the documents here. Where stage one looked south, this one goes block by block through the northern suburbs, Leichhardt included, focusing density around light rail stops and main streets rather than concentrating it near stations. It is the council's answer to state rezonings it fought to rescind. Critics warn of lost parking, heritage and open space. The companion transport blueprint is worth a read too. Mezzapica makes the old-guard list
The famous cannoli counter on Norton St has recieved a nice nod. Mezzapica, the Sicilian bakery that's been dusting icing sugar over Little Italy since the early 1960s, has landed in a Urbanlist roundup of Sydney's oldest eateries still going. Angelo Mezzapica came off the Aeolian island of Lipari in 1949 with the recipes in his head, and the tortes, biscuits and celebration cakes have been feeding myself and local families ever since.
Exciting proposals for Norton Street
Council is asking what Norton Street's public spaces should become, and two ideas are on the table. One would let the strip between Macauley and Marlborough Sts close for up to six Sundays a year for community events. The other is a 12-month trial turning part of Carlisle St in front of The Royal into a pedestrian space with seating, planting and outdoor dining. Plenty of locals want more life on the street. Others reckon it mostly hands free space to the pub and cafe while squeezing parking and traffic. Feedback closes Sunday 25 October, so you can have your say before then. Six families, one Hubert St garage sale
Six households on Hubert St, down near Dan Murphys, are throwing open their garages together this Sunday morning from 10-12. Expect dress-ups, little toys and stacks of books priced to shift, plus a few IKEA shelves going free to whoever wants them. One street, plenty of stalls, and the small joy of wandering along to see what turns up. Always good for a dig. (Source: Leichhardt Community Group)
Who decides the name on a landmark?
A reader wrote in about the plan to rename the LPAC pool for late surgeon Richard Scolyer in 2028. "If we are naming public facilities, should there not be a more open process instead of just the Mayor's pronouncement?" he asks. He's not knocking the man: "Not to take away from Scolyer's achievements" which were remarkable. But he's asked us to put it to you, and I'm happy to oblige. I personally like how quickly things move in a mild dictatorship, when they're not discussed forever, but keen to hear what everyone thinks.
